El Paraigua is not only a jewel in the midst of the modernism route of Barcelona, nor is it only a regular cocktail lounge. Neither is it only an ideal location for concerts with the most perfect acoustic sounds reflected off the stone arches of the wine cellars, that was once the home to one of the oldest convents in the Barrio Gotico, nor is it only an intimate place with a display of local art exhibitions, an ideal location to hold conferences and events located in the heart of Barcelona.
El Paraigua is all of this and much more. An exceptional property, directly behind plaza St.Jaume, open to all those who enjoy a good cocktail, try an extensive choice of tapas and a wide variety of national wines, allowing yourself to become lost within the music in a bar full of charm, character and endless history.
The opening of the bar El Paraigua took place on the 5th of April 1968, by using and re-building the interior with all the original decoration and installations that were from a modernist store dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, which dedicated in selling umbrellas and fans.
This store known as Gallés, founded in 1902, in Calle Arcs number 5 was then closed in 1967. From then the owner of the store sold all of the decorative content to Mr Josep M. Espada. All of the elements within the store were dismantled piece by piece and from there on Espada created a new design to adapt the artefacts from the store to be able to fit into a smaller property next to plaza St.Jaume, designed to become a bar. Two brothers by the name of Yagüe were responsible in restoring the entire wooden interior and re-fitting them enabling them to fit into the new property.
All of the interior is of modernism origin, from the bar to the ceiling, wall lamps, fittings and fixtures including the cash register dating back to 1898.
During the 1980´s they decided to expand the property by restoring the basement which has original brick walls and arches from the wine cellars of the convent belonging to the nuns of La Enseñanza.
Whilst restoring and adapting the basement they managed to fully conserve the original floor, brick work, arches the oldest part being the central wall which dates back to the 11th century.
The Jewel in the basement is within the cocktail bar itself, which is structured between two golden columns which were found to be from a Barroc alter.
